What is a Scam?
A scam is a way of deceiving individuals, organizations or even the government, using a fraudulent scheme to gather sensitive information. This information can be in the form of passwords, credit card details, bank details, national ID details, personal data, photos, etc., all of which can be misused by scammers. The victims are usually those that are vulnerable and easy to manipulate into handing over their essential data, either willingly or unknowingly.
An upsurge in digital technology has led to most people moving online for their day-to-day needs, making it increasingly easier to scam unsuspecting victims from behind the screen. Scams were less rampant earlier, as communication was face-to-face and tricksters had a tougher time of it. The rise of online platforms has further facilitated the proliferation of scams, with scamsters being able to access victims from across the globe now.
Phishing
A common form of scamming is phishing scam which can employ routes such as emailing, messaging, or look-alike websites impersonating reputable companies or people. Phishing scams try to get people into disclosing private or financial data which is later used to commit fraud or malicious activities.
Ransomware
This is a type of malicious software that gets into your system and takes over its function, making it impossible for you to access your files and computer. It sends messages demanding ransom before your system can be restored back to you.
Threats and Extortion
This type of scam involves threats to life and unlawful ways to frighten a person into giving away money, services or property. Through coercion and hijacking of their computer, scammers can get the victim to hand over whatever they desire.
Identity Theft
Also known as impersonation scam, fraudsters fool the victim into handing over crucial personal information, allowing them to access benefits such as money or other gains.
Lottery Scams
Here, the potential victim is lured by a ‘surprise win’ of substantial sum of money which first requires the victim to make an upfront payment. The scammer usually sends an email or text about winning an overseas lottery or sweepstake.
There are numerous other types of scams going on out there, making it vital that people remain skeptical of unsolicited requests or ‘too-good-to-be-true’ offers, and stay safe from scammers.
