Will Wi-Fi Work in Airplane Mode?

Airplane mode, also known as flight mode, is applied when on a flight, in compliance with aviation regulations. This ensures that wireless signals from electronic devices do not interfere with the airplane’s navigation and communication systems. Smart mobile phones and other internet-enabled devices come with a setting that enables users to turn off its internet connection. Once you enable airplane mode on your device, it disables all wireless communication functions utilizing LTE, 4G or 5G for calling, texting, GPS and accessing data for emailing or surfing the net.

By switching on the airplane mode, you are essentially turning off the radio frequency transmission of your phone or laptop, including the signals used for Wi-Fi connectivity. Therefore, even if Wi-Fi network is available – as is the case in some long-haul flights, your device can’t connect to it as long as it’s in airplane mode.

However, most breed of modern devices offer you the option to enable Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth while in the airplane mode. This allows the user to access data services for messaging or calling apps, commonly referred to as ‘Wi-Fi calling’ or ‘Wi-Fi texting. Travelers can then make calls or send messages over the Wi-Fi network, without using data.

Aside from this, some flights offer Wi-Fi as part of in-flight services, giving fliers the convenience of connecting to the airplane’s network. However, do note that passengers can enable their Wi-Fi even while the phone is in the airplane mode. This means that you can enjoy listening to music, watch videos, play games and enjoy using other apps – all without having to need your phone’s network.

It’s also worth mentioning here that specific rules related to smart phone usage vary among the various airlines and the type of aircrafts. Prior to take off, flight crew usually provide instructions to passengers related to device usage in compliance with aviation regulations. While some flights require passengers to power off their phones completely, others might allow limited usage in the airplane mode.

Finally, while Wi-Fi may not work in airplane mode, there might be some exceptions to this, depending on the specific features of the device and the policies of the aircraft or airline you are flying in. Most importantly, follow the crew’s instructions!
